Drumming out Edinburgh
Online Bookings have now closed, please contact Iain McFarlane for late availability
The British Senate Drumming Out will be held in Edinburgh from the late afternoon on Thursday 17th January until Sunday 20th January 2019.
We will start on the Thursday afternoon with a meal and drink before going to Mary Kings Close. Mary King’s Close is hidden beneath the characteristic and lively streets of Edinburgh’s busy thoroughfare – the Royal Mile. Unlock the secrets of Edinburgh’s only preserved 17th century street, wander through a labyrinth of Old Town alleyways, avoid the cry of gardyloo and discover the stories of the people who lived, worked, and died here.
We start with a private tour of Holyrood Palace. This special tour of Scotland’s official residence of The Queen highlights both Holyrood’s dramatic past and the Palace’s important role today. In the company of an expert guide, our group will enjoy a private tour of the State Apartments before the Palace opens to visitors for the day. This private tour offers a unique opportunity to go behind the ropes in selected rooms. The West Drawing Room, used by members of the Royal Family as a private sitting room and not normally open to the public, is included in this tour. It is among the most beautiful rooms in the palace and boasts one of the finest 17th-century plasterwork ceilings. After a light lunch we will visit the Scottish Parliament to see where Scotland’s devolved government meets. This modern building immediately across the road from Holyrood Palace provides a constrasting architectural style. The evening will see a Scottish Ceilidh together a Scottish themed buffet.
The morning continues the Royal theme with a self-guided tour of the Royal Yacht Britannia which is moored in Leith harbour. Following this there will be a presentation lunch. For those Senators in the one size fits no one club there will be a Bumble Bee Club meeting back at the Drumming Out Hotel. Saturday evening will see the traditional Drumming Out of the 2018 Chairman and the installation of the Chairman for 2019. The weekend will end on the Sunday morning with a Senate Breakfast hosted by the 2019 Senate Chairman.
The Hotel for the whole weekend is the Macdonald Holyrood. This will be the venue for the Friday evening Ceilidh, Bumble Bee meeting, Saturday dinner and Sunday Senate Breakfast.
