RUTLAND SENATE WEEKEND II

It seems like a long, long time since we last met in Canterbury and who would have imagined then that the next Senate weekend would be around 18 months later?
That makes it even more of a pleasure for me to invite you to join Athene and I at Rutland II – the Sequel on the weekend of Friday 30th July to Sunday 1st August 2021.
The itinerary is very much the same as that which was planned for 2020, albeit with one or two minor adjustments to accommodate brides who are having their weddings on or around Rutland Water on the same weekend, many of them also postponed from last year.
So, we have accommodation reserved at the Holiday Inn, Corby.    And yes, I know that Corby is not actually in Rutland but it’s pretty damn close and the hotels in Rutland are not of a size to accommodate our size group at a reasonable price.
Double rooms at the Holiday Inn are £90 per night including breakfast and our booking block code to quote is 495990. The hotel’s phone number is 01536 401020 and if you have any problems in booking, Abbi Coles is the manager there dealing with our weekend.
 –
The hotel can offer a limited number of single rooms at £70 bed and breakfast per night; if you want one of these please email events@hicorby.com for the attention of Abbi Coles.
Friday We will have a two course dinner at the hotel on the Friday evening, and then a few drinks no doubt to celebrate our return to normality!
Saturday we have coach travel arranged.   The first stop will be Oakham, the county town of Rutland, where we will have a guided walking tour of this historic town, with one or two tour guides depending on our numbers, one of them being Bill Cunningham who was a member of Coventry Junior Chamber in the 1980s.
The walk will take in Oakham Castle, where the great hall contains one of the world’s largest collections of horseshoes, the horseshoe being the traditional emblem of Rutland.
The walk will end at the Grainstore Brewery, Rutland’s largest independent brewery, founded by those who used to brew for Ruddles in the days before that brewery surrendered its independence.  The brewery makes some excellent ales; we won’t be having a brewery tour but will be served with a ploughman’s lunch in the pub which they operate adjacent to the brewery.   There will be a chance to sample some of their fine ales if you wish, and other drinks are of course available.
In recent years, Rutland Water has been the location for a highly successful “Osprey Project”, enticing this bird back to the area in increasing numbers year on year, birds returning to the very same nest year after year.  After lunch we will visit the Visitor Centre at the water’s edge to hear an introductory talk about the ospreys, the ideal preparation for our cruise on the Rutland Belle, giving you a chance to see the sights of Rutland from the water, and enjoy pastries and tea/coffee en route.   There will also be a fully licensed bar on board.
Then back to our hotel for the traditional Saturday evening three course Senate dinner.
Sunday morning, we have organised private tours of Rockingham Castle which is on the border between Northamptonshire and Rutland and from where you can see five counties on a clear day!   The tours will be followed by lunch at the castle before we say our goodbyes in the hope that it won’t be another 18 months before we meet again.
The costs of the weekend are exactly the same as they were twelve months ago, and let me assure you that if for any reason we cannot go ahead after all, you will get all your money back, so please book with that confidence.
We look forward to seeing you.

A deposit of £50 per head secures your place with balance due at the beginning of July please.

The costs will be as before –
Friday evening dinner at the hotel (with wine) – £32
Saturday all day – walking tour, lunch, Osprey Centre visit, cruise with pastries, evening meal at the hotel with wine – £100
