SUMMARY:Hope in the High Peaks
DESCRIPTION:Hope in the High Peak \n \nJoin us for a relaxing weekend enjoying the views and delights of the Hope Valley and High peak area of the Peak district.  There will be an emphasis on photography and how to take better pictures of the fabulous landscape in the area. \nOur home for the weekend will be the Bike and Boot hotel which is conveniently positioned in the middle of the Hope Valley just south of Sheffield.  https://www.bikeandboot.com/peak-district  This newly built hotel offers good facilities and excellent size rooms and even free cake at teatime!!!  Dogs are very welcome at this hotel.  We have 14 standard doubles reserved on a first come\, first served basis and the hotel is fairly well booked up that weekend already so get your bookings in.  All unreserved rooms will be released at the beginning of April. \nRoom rate is for the two-night stay and is for a standard double (kingsize bed) at £270 \nThere is a campsite a mile or so down the road if you prefer. \nItinerary \nBoth evening meals on Friday and Saturday night will take place at the Bike and Boot and will be very informal.  Both meals will be pre-ordered off their menu and drinks bought from the bar. \nSaturday \nIn the morning there will be a tour of some of the beautiful viewpoints in the area.  At each we will stop and you will be given some pointers on how you can get the best photograph.  At some there will be a short walk to reach the ideal spot but not too arduous.  After looking at prices for a minibus\, it is planned that we will do this tour by car. \nAlternatively there will be a walk organised for the more active of you over the high peak behind the hotel.  This will be about six or seven miles in length. \nBoth these activities will finish in Castleton at lunchtime where we have booked to meet up at the Castle Inn for lunch.  This again will be pre-ordered off their usual lunchtime menu. \nOn Saturday afternoon\, we will be visiting the Peak Cavern in Castleton which is situated in the cliff just behind the village.  The tour lasts for an hour and will cost about £22.  Infirmation about the Cavern and tour can be found at  https://peakcavern.co.uk/  There will also be time to explore the village further\, visit Peveril Castle on the top of the cliff or even find out more about the famous blue john that is mined in the area. \nOnce you have had your fill of Castleton\, it is a direct bus straight back to the hotel. \nSaturday evening we will plan some activity or entertainment for after the meal.  There is both a sitting room for hotel guests and a small cinema available. \nOn the Sunday\, the plan is to visit Chatsworth House or Gardens before people return to their homes.  You can visit both house and garden at your leisure but I hope to plan a tour of the Gardens incorporating once again the most photogenic spots to allow you to get the best out of your camera. \nHotel booking details are available on the form below so please register attendance and book soon.  We look forward to seeing you there. \n	\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Payment options\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Submit Reservation

SUMMARY:Drumming Out 2026
DESCRIPTION:*******BOOKINGS FOR THE DRUMMING OUT ARE NOW CLOSED******** \nSEE YOU IN HARROGATE \n \nEY UP \nWe really hope you will be able to join us for the 2026 Drumming Out weekend which will take place in the spa town of Harrogate\, Yorkshire.  This fun-filled weekend will allow us to drum out Graeme Greenfield as 2025 Senate Chairman and formally confirm Jeff Evans in post. \nHarrogate is easily accessible by car or train and a short bus ride from Leeds International airport.  The Conference Hotel is Cedar Court\, Park Parade\, Harrogate\, HG1 5AH. \nThursday 15th January     \nThe evening will start at approximately 6.00 pm with a 2-course meal in the beautiful hotel restaurant.  It’s then a short\, flat 10-minute walk to the Everyman Cinema for a welcome drink and a special viewing of a selected film – details to be shared in due course. Audience participation encouraged\, but not compulsory!     \n \nFriday 16th January \nWe would like to show you some of the beautiful\, local countryside so will be boarding a coach from the hotel to take us to Ripon\, a stunning cathedral city. It is the third smallest city in the country and is full of independent shops\, lovely buildings and plenty to see. \nIn the morning we will have a guided tour of the lovely Cathedral\, including a visit to the Crypt.  A short 5-minute walk will take us to the Ripon Bowling Club for lunch – although\, sadly\, there will be no bowls as the bowling green is now a car park.  A buffet lunch will be followed by some presentations from our international guests. We may even be able to use the snooker room. \nAfter lunch\, another short walk (with a bit of a hill) will take us to one of three museums. Further details will be available nearer the time for you to make your choice but you can take a look at www.riponmuseums.co.uk.  You will have the chance to visit the Workhouse Museum\, the Prison Museum or the Courthouse Museum\, all of which will include some live interpretations and demonstrations.  Any senator that has been mis-behaving may find PC Plod Greenfield will send them to the cells for the afternoon\, so be warned…. \n \nWe will then board the coach back to the hotel and a bit of R & R (rest and relaxation\, Real Ale and Rum or….).  The coach will return to take us on a short 5-minute drive to Yorkshire Night which is taking place in a traditional Working Men’s Club in Harrogate.   Expect a range of traditional Yorkshire food\, drink and entertainment.   Real ale will be in plentiful supply\, along with other drinks too\, of course. \n \nSaturday 17th January \nToday we have plenty of time to explore the delights of the spa town of Harrogate.  A guided tour of the city centre will help you orient yourselves and find out more about the history of water\, healing spas\, Agatha Christie and more.   We will visit the recently refurbished Royal Pump Room as well as the local Wetherspoons pub in the former royal baths.  This is purely to see the wonderful architecture of course….  A light buffet lunch will also be served. \nYou have a range of options for the afternoon – you can join the pub tour or go shopping\, visit some of the local gardens\, go gin-tasting\, have a visit to the Turkish baths.   Back to the hotel for the Bumble Bee for those who are members.  This will be a dry event – only in terms of there being no pool\, not in terms of being alcohol-free\, of course. \nThe evening Gala Dinner is in the main ballroom of the hotel\, starting with a fizz Reception and a three-course meal\, with wine.  We will conclude with the Drumming Out / In ceremony where we will bid a fond farewell to Graeme and award the bottle of champagne to the sweepstake winner who is closest to the length of his speeches over the year. \nSunday 18th January   \nThe traditional Senate Breakfast – with champagne (well\, more likely to be Cava…) – will be held in the hotel and will give incoming Senate Chairman Jeff Evans the chance to introduce his team and tell you more about the plans for 2026. There will be a small supplement for breakfast those who are staying at the hotel (to cover fizz and room hire). \nWe are looking forward to seeing you in Harrogate in 2026.

We will then Leisurely Head Homeward along the North Wales coast towards England and stop for lunch at the excellent Glasfryn before you continue your journey home. \nIf you have the time on Thursday there will be an On Our Way to Anglesey optional programme to explore North Wales starting with lunch (possibly The Dinorban Arms\, Bodfari) for those that wish to explore the North Wales mainland before heading for the Isle of Anglesey. \nFor those coming from outside the UK a informal pre-tour can be organised if you would like a few more days in North Wales. Once I know who is coming I will look at the possibility of assisting with transport from Manchester Airport but there are regular trains to nearby Bangor and Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. \nPriority for the main hotel will be given to those with a physical need and then those staying for 3 nights or more.  The rooms will be allocated in strict sequence of receiving bookings AND your deposit payment. Please note that there are only 2 single rooms available at the lower rate in the main hotel although there are plenty of economical single rooms available in the Gazelle and Bulls Head. \nA deposit of £100 per person will secure your room and full balances are due by 18th July. \nBook via Google forms at https://forms.gle/VvX8TG8bqMAanG969 \nDo not delay if you want to be sure of staying in the main hotel!

SUMMARY:Cricket
DESCRIPTION:Come Cricketing \nFriday 4th July 2025\, Headingley \nFor those who love to hear the sound of leather on willow\, you are welcome to join us at Yorkshire County Cricket Club on Friday 4th July for an evening of cricketing entertainment. \n \nThe game will see Yorkshire -v- Worcestershire in a Vitality Blast 10 match which means each side bowls 20 overs (unless they are out before then….) with bowlers allocated a maximum of 4 overs each.  The plan is to meet in Headingley from 4.00 pm for a bite to eat and then make our way to the ground for a 6.00 pm start.  There are bars and food outlets in the ground too.  Afterwards we may be persuaded to pop into a local drinking establishment for a nightcap… \nFor those who do not wish to join the cricket\, the alternative suggestion is a spot of shopping and then a nice meal in a local restaurant…before meeting with the others for drinks. \nWe recommend you book your own hotel with three being very close to the ground: Weetwood Hall; The Village Hotel; or the Premier Inn (the one at the Arndale centre). Alternatively\, you can book the hotel which is actually located in the grounds – the Headingley Lodge. \nWe are happy to look at putting something on for Saturday for those who wish to make a weekend of it. \nTickets are £25 each. \nPlease RSVP using the form below or via email to Sally-Anne Greenfield\, secretary@britishsenate.org.uk who will then send details about how to pay. \n	\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Payment options\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Submit Reservation

SUMMARY:Delightful Derbyshire
DESCRIPTION:Our weekend base is the historic city of Derby which\, despite having a cathedral since 1927\, didn’t gain city status until 1977.\nWe are staying in the Leonardo Hotel (www.leonardohotels.co.uk/hotels/derby)\, set in the heart of the stunning Cathedral district\, surrounded by bars\, restaurants and plenty of retail therapy outlets.  We have secured excellent rates of £80 per night for a single person and just £90 per night for a twin/double room. \nFriday\nThose who can arrive early\, please meet at the hotel at 2.00 pm for a tour of the Cathedral district by none other than our very own Clare Ashton. Stopping off at the “Museum of Making” (www.derbymuseums.org/museum-of-making) for refreshments. The tour is free\, and food/drink is at your own cost.\nAn evening buffet awaits you in the hotel from 7.30 pm\, giving you the chance to meet up with friends old and new and enjoy an evening of conviviality with fellow senators and guests. \nSaturday\nMeet in the hotel lobby at 9.45 am to board the coach for a short journey to the morning’s activities. The first stop is the delightful Carsington Water where you can go for a walk in the meadow or round the reservoir\, enjoy bird watching in one of the many hides (Buzzards\, Great Crested Grebes\, Kingfishers and Lapwings\, as well as lots of ducks)\, visit the exhibition or have a stroll round the shops in the lovely courtyard. (www.visitcarsington.co.uk).\nIf you would prefer to get your tastebuds going\, remain on the coach for the short trip to White Peak Distillery\, the county’s first full-scale craft distillery\, making award-winning Wire Works Whisky\, Shining Cliff Gin\, and Rum. A guided tour of the distillery will be followed by a sample of all three tipples. (www.whitepeakdistillery.co.uk).\nTipplers will then return by coach\, to Carsington\, for lunch. \nLunch is at your own cost and can be taken in the Mainsail restaurant with stunning views of the reservoir. We will do our best to reserve a spot in the restaurant and you can order what you want – depending on how hungry you are but spare some room for afternoon tea… \nAfter lunch\, at approximately 1.45 pm\, we will hop back on the coach which will whisk us off to Croots Farm Shop (www.croots.co.uk)\, established by senators Steve & Kay Croot back in 2016. Here the group will split into two with one visiting the shop and food production area\, with a talk by Kay and the other going with Kay’s Dad\, Jim\, who will introduce you to his stunning Shire Horses and tell you a bit about the Cowerslane Shire Horse Stud – www.facebook.com/JimYatesShires/.  It should be lambing time so you may have the chance to see the lambs being fed. The groups will then swop over. \nDuring this time\, we will also have a light afternoon tea with sandwiches\, sausage roll\, cake and scone. \nWe return to the hotel by approximately 5.30 pm\, with time to freshen up before embarking back on the coach at 7.00 pm for a 25-minute trip to Morley Hayes where we will have a glass of prosecco and a delicious three-course meal. Drinks with the meal to be purchased at your own expense. The venue is a AA4* hotel and golf club with beautiful interiors and spectacular views of the Derbyshire countryside. They also have a helipad but use of that is also at your own expense!\nWe return to the Leonardo hotel at 10.30 pm and you can have a drink in the bar\, retire to your room or discover the nightlife of the cathedral district bars which are on the doorstep. \nSunday\nAfter a leisurely breakfast in the hotel\, we ask that people make their own way to the morning’s activities which will take place from 10.30 to 12.15.  There is small\, hourly charge to park on site. For those coming by train we will arrange for lifts to be provided. We are spending the morning at Great Northern Classics (www.greatnorthernclassics.co.uk)\, based at the former Rolls-Royce Heritage Centre at the Victoria Ironworks foundry\, which is where Senator Andrew Thompson now works. The site includes: a fully equipped training school\, workshops for around 30 specialists\, a car storage area\, exhibition and entertainment space. An introductory talk and time to visit the exhibition will be arranged (we are not yet sure what this will be\, but there will be themed cars and bikes\, and aero engines). This will be followed by a hot and cold buffet style lunch from 12.30 before setting off home from c. 1.30\, having experienced the delights of Derbyshire. \nAccessibility\nIf you would like an accessible room\, please contact the hotel directly.\nUnfortunately\, the coach doesn’t have any specialist facilities\, but they can store wheelchairs in the luggage area. Carsington Water is fully accessible\, but the brewery tour is unfortunately not. Some aspects of the farm visit may be a bit tricky for those with limited mobility\, but there will still be plenty to see and do. Both the Saturday night venue\, and Great Northern Classics\, are both fully accessible. \nHotel: please make your own booking at the hotel by following these instructions. You can either use this shortened URL to take you to the established senate page (https://tinyurl.com/47ccv5ja) or just go to www.leonardohotels.co.uk/hotels/derby. SUMMARY:Drumming Out 2025
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT NOW SOLD OUT\nFrom 16th-19th January 2025\, we are delighted and very proud to welcome you to Barnsley\, the hometown of our Chairman Nick Hawley.  Although he has now abandoned ‘Gods own county’ to live ‘Darn Sarth’\, he is and always will be a true Boy from Barnsley and he is looking forward to showing you some of the (new improved) town. \nBarnsley is a true mining town which became notorious during the Miners’ Strike in the 1980’s\, as it was the hometown of Arthur Scargill\, the former General Secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers.  Like most other places where the local economy relied on coal mining and where most jobs were in this industry\, the town went into decline because of the closure of most of the mines but now\, forty years later\, Barnsley has a new town centre with companies queuing up to invest. \nAccommodation\nTankersley Manor\nOur base for the weekend is Tankersley Manor.  A Mercure hotel on the edge of the town and nestled in an elevated position backing onto woodland\, Tankersley Manor Hotel and Spa is a stunning 17th century residence that offers the perfect blend of luxury and tranquility. Boasting 98 elegant bedrooms\, with the majority of these being recently refurbished\, the hotel is the ideal choice and will be the venue for our informal Thursday evening\, Saturday’s Gala Dinner; and Sunday’s Senate Breakfast.  With extensive spa facilities\, there is the opportunity to really relax if you wish.  We have negotiated a good price including breakfast and advise you to reserve your rooms early to avoid disappointment. \nPlease call the hotel directly to book  on +44 (0) 1226 744700 quote British Senate event January 2025\nRoom Rates:- B&B Twin/Double rooms Thursday or Friday night £109 per night\, Saturday night £129\nRoom Rates:- B&B Single rooms Thursday or Friday night £99 per night\, Saturday night £109\nAlternative accommodation – Premier Inn Barnsley approx 1mile from M1 Junction 36. Maple Road\, Tankersley S75 3DL (1/2 a mile from Tankersley Manor) \nProgramme\nThursday Evening      \nWe would like to welcome you to an informal evening and catch up with all your Senate Friends. This will be held in a private function room at Tankersley Manor – there will be a buffet supper and bar. \n\nFriday Daytime\nWe will be taking a coach into the centre of Barnsley where we will be welcomed at the Town Hall.  There\, we will be greeted by the Mayor and the Chief Executive of the town who will show us the impressive chamber and Mayor’s parlour.  Over lunch they will discuss with us how Barnsley has changed in recent years\,  building on its history\, promoting its new town centre and how it is progressing\, to achieve its vision. Barnsley was voted best Council of the year in 2023. You’ll have the chance to question the leaders how this has been achieved.\nThere will be an opportunity to visit the Experience Barnsley Museum to learn more about the town’s rich history.\nIn the afternoon\, there will be some free time to explore the town centre before the coach returns us to the hotel to get ready to go back out in the early evening\, for the evening’s event.\nThere is an alternative option for a guided walking tour of 4/5 real ale bars around the town centre.\nPlease click on this link to find out more about the regrowth of Barnsley. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qqx0itw-IUA \n\nFriday Evening\nCannon Hall Farm. As seen on TV.\nOwned by the Nicholson family since 1958\, this working farm was inherited by the current owner\, Roger\, at the age of 16 when his father died.  His hard work\, and that of his wife and three sons\, has now turned it into a large nationally acclaimed award winning tourist attraction with farm shop\, children’s play areas and viewing areas for the animals.  The farm is regularly featured on several Channel 5 shows such as Springtime on the Farm and the Yorkshire Vet.  Throughout the pandemic\, Rob and Dave Nicholson started posting daily live broadcasts on their Facebook page and they now have over 600\,000 followers worldwide.\nWe will be having an exclusive after-hours tour of the farm followed by a private three course dinner in their onsite restaurant with after dinner speeches from Farmers Rob and Dave themselves. \n\nSaturday Daytime\nWe will be visiting the historical house of Wentworth Woodhouse for the day.  Once home to the Fitzwilliam family\, it is one of the great houses of England\, a mighty work of architecture\, a palace of beauty and art and for 300 years both a political powerhouse and the hub of social and economic life across a swathe of South Yorkshire.\nThe last Earl Fitzwilliam died in 1989 and since then the house has been greatly neglected.  It is now owned by the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust (WWPT) which was established in 2013. The overarching purpose of the Trust is to secure the future of Wentworth Woodhouse for the public benefit. In particular: 1. To preserve the House and grounds on a long-term sustainable basis with extensive public opening; 2. To find sustainable and sympathetic uses for those parts of the property not open to the public; 3. To raise funds both for acquisition and repairs and other essential works.\nWe will be enjoying a guided tour of the building where we will hear about the house’s rich history and about the current restoration works.  While here we will also enjoy a lunchtime buffet. There is also an opportunity to tour the gardens. \nSaturday Evening\nThe Drumming Out of Chairman Nick Hawley will take place at Tankersley Manor. Drinks Reception\, a fine 3 course meal followed by musical entertainment\, after welcoming in the new Chairman Graeme Greenfield. \nSunday Morning\nThe final event of the weekend is the Senate Breakfast\, when you hear about Graeme’s plans for 2025 before making your way home. \nWe really look forward to hosting you for this fabulous weekend and the culmination of Senate Chairman Nick Hawley’s year in office. \nPlease direct queries to DrummingOut2025@gmail.com or by calling Sarah Whittle\, DO2025 Director on +44 (0)7747-060748 or Nigel Wilkinson\, Co-Director DO2025 on +44(0)7831-544850 \nDrumming Out Promotional Video \nDrumming Out 2025 flyer
