SUMMARY:Delightful Derbyshire
DESCRIPTION:Our weekend base is the historic city of Derby which\, despite having a cathedral since 1927\, didn’t gain city status until 1977.\nWe are staying in the Leonardo Hotel (www.leonardohotels.co.uk/hotels/derby)\, set in the heart of the stunning Cathedral district\, surrounded by bars\, restaurants and plenty of retail therapy outlets.  We have secured excellent rates of £80 per night for a single person and just £90 per night for a twin/double room. \nFriday\nThose who can arrive early\, please meet at the hotel at 2.00 pm for a tour of the Cathedral district by none other than our very own Clare Ashton. Stopping off at the “Museum of Making” (www.derbymuseums.org/museum-of-making) for refreshments. The tour is free\, and food/drink is at your own cost.\nAn evening buffet awaits you in the hotel from 7.30 pm\, giving you the chance to meet up with friends old and new and enjoy an evening of conviviality with fellow senators and guests. \nSaturday\nMeet in the hotel lobby at 9.45 am to board the coach for a short journey to the morning’s activities. The first stop is the delightful Carsington Water where you can go for a walk in the meadow or round the reservoir\, enjoy bird watching in one of the many hides (Buzzards\, Great Crested Grebes\, Kingfishers and Lapwings\, as well as lots of ducks)\, visit the exhibition or have a stroll round the shops in the lovely courtyard. (www.visitcarsington.co.uk).\nIf you would prefer to get your tastebuds going\, remain on the coach for the short trip to White Peak Distillery\, the county’s first full-scale craft distillery\, making award-winning Wire Works Whisky\, Shining Cliff Gin\, and Rum. A guided tour of the distillery will be followed by a sample of all three tipples. (www.whitepeakdistillery.co.uk).\nTipplers will then return by coach\, to Carsington\, for lunch. \nLunch is at your own cost and can be taken in the Mainsail restaurant with stunning views of the reservoir. We will do our best to reserve a spot in the restaurant and you can order what you want – depending on how hungry you are but spare some room for afternoon tea… \nAfter lunch\, at approximately 1.45 pm\, we will hop back on the coach which will whisk us off to Croots Farm Shop (www.croots.co.uk)\, established by senators Steve & Kay Croot back in 2016. Here the group will split into two with one visiting the shop and food production area\, with a talk by Kay and the other going with Kay’s Dad\, Jim\, who will introduce you to his stunning Shire Horses and tell you a bit about the Cowerslane Shire Horse Stud – www.facebook.com/JimYatesShires/.  It should be lambing time so you may have the chance to see the lambs being fed. The groups will then swop over. \nDuring this time\, we will also have a light afternoon tea with sandwiches\, sausage roll\, cake and scone. \nWe return to the hotel by approximately 5.30 pm\, with time to freshen up before embarking back on the coach at 7.00 pm for a 25-minute trip to Morley Hayes where we will have a glass of prosecco and a delicious three-course meal. Drinks with the meal to be purchased at your own expense. The venue is a AA4* hotel and golf club with beautiful interiors and spectacular views of the Derbyshire countryside. They also have a helipad but use of that is also at your own expense!\nWe return to the Leonardo hotel at 10.30 pm and you can have a drink in the bar\, retire to your room or discover the nightlife of the cathedral district bars which are on the doorstep. \nSunday\nAfter a leisurely breakfast in the hotel\, we ask that people make their own way to the morning’s activities which will take place from 10.30 to 12.15.  There is small\, hourly charge to park on site. For those coming by train we will arrange for lifts to be provided. We are spending the morning at Great Northern Classics (www.greatnorthernclassics.co.uk)\, based at the former Rolls-Royce Heritage Centre at the Victoria Ironworks foundry\, which is where Senator Andrew Thompson now works. The site includes: a fully equipped training school\, workshops for around 30 specialists\, a car storage area\, exhibition and entertainment space. An introductory talk and time to visit the exhibition will be arranged (we are not yet sure what this will be\, but there will be themed cars and bikes\, and aero engines). This will be followed by a hot and cold buffet style lunch from 12.30 before setting off home from c. 1.30\, having experienced the delights of Derbyshire. \nAccessibility\nIf you would like an accessible room\, please contact the hotel directly.\nUnfortunately\, the coach doesn’t have any specialist facilities\, but they can store wheelchairs in the luggage area. Carsington Water is fully accessible\, but the brewery tour is unfortunately not. Some aspects of the farm visit may be a bit tricky for those with limited mobility\, but there will still be plenty to see and do. Both the Saturday night venue\, and Great Northern Classics\, are both fully accessible. \nHotel: please make your own booking at the hotel by following these instructions. You can either use this shortened URL to take you to the established senate page (https://tinyurl.com/47ccv5ja) or just go to www.leonardohotels.co.uk/hotels/derby. SUMMARY:Drumming Out 2025
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT NOW SOLD OUT\nFrom 16th-19th January 2025\, we are delighted and very proud to welcome you to Barnsley\, the hometown of our Chairman Nick Hawley.  Although he has now abandoned ‘Gods own county’ to live ‘Darn Sarth’\, he is and always will be a true Boy from Barnsley and he is looking forward to showing you some of the (new improved) town. \nBarnsley is a true mining town which became notorious during the Miners’ Strike in the 1980’s\, as it was the hometown of Arthur Scargill\, the former General Secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers.  Like most other places where the local economy relied on coal mining and where most jobs were in this industry\, the town went into decline because of the closure of most of the mines but now\, forty years later\, Barnsley has a new town centre with companies queuing up to invest. \nAccommodation\nTankersley Manor\nOur base for the weekend is Tankersley Manor.  A Mercure hotel on the edge of the town and nestled in an elevated position backing onto woodland\, Tankersley Manor Hotel and Spa is a stunning 17th century residence that offers the perfect blend of luxury and tranquility. Boasting 98 elegant bedrooms\, with the majority of these being recently refurbished\, the hotel is the ideal choice and will be the venue for our informal Thursday evening\, Saturday’s Gala Dinner; and Sunday’s Senate Breakfast.  With extensive spa facilities\, there is the opportunity to really relax if you wish.  We have negotiated a good price including breakfast and advise you to reserve your rooms early to avoid disappointment. \nPlease call the hotel directly to book  on +44 (0) 1226 744700 quote British Senate event January 2025\nRoom Rates:- B&B Twin/Double rooms Thursday or Friday night £109 per night\, Saturday night £129\nRoom Rates:- B&B Single rooms Thursday or Friday night £99 per night\, Saturday night £109\nAlternative accommodation – Premier Inn Barnsley approx 1mile from M1 Junction 36. Maple Road\, Tankersley S75 3DL (1/2 a mile from Tankersley Manor) \nProgramme\nThursday Evening      \nWe would like to welcome you to an informal evening and catch up with all your Senate Friends. This will be held in a private function room at Tankersley Manor – there will be a buffet supper and bar. \n\nFriday Daytime\nWe will be taking a coach into the centre of Barnsley where we will be welcomed at the Town Hall.  There\, we will be greeted by the Mayor and the Chief Executive of the town who will show us the impressive chamber and Mayor’s parlour.  Over lunch they will discuss with us how Barnsley has changed in recent years\,  building on its history\, promoting its new town centre and how it is progressing\, to achieve its vision. Barnsley was voted best Council of the year in 2023. You’ll have the chance to question the leaders how this has been achieved.\nThere will be an opportunity to visit the Experience Barnsley Museum to learn more about the town’s rich history.\nIn the afternoon\, there will be some free time to explore the town centre before the coach returns us to the hotel to get ready to go back out in the early evening\, for the evening’s event.\nThere is an alternative option for a guided walking tour of 4/5 real ale bars around the town centre.\nPlease click on this link to find out more about the regrowth of Barnsley. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qqx0itw-IUA \n\nFriday Evening\nCannon Hall Farm. As seen on TV.\nOwned by the Nicholson family since 1958\, this working farm was inherited by the current owner\, Roger\, at the age of 16 when his father died.  His hard work\, and that of his wife and three sons\, has now turned it into a large nationally acclaimed award winning tourist attraction with farm shop\, children’s play areas and viewing areas for the animals.  The farm is regularly featured on several Channel 5 shows such as Springtime on the Farm and the Yorkshire Vet.  Throughout the pandemic\, Rob and Dave Nicholson started posting daily live broadcasts on their Facebook page and they now have over 600\,000 followers worldwide.\nWe will be having an exclusive after-hours tour of the farm followed by a private three course dinner in their onsite restaurant with after dinner speeches from Farmers Rob and Dave themselves. \n\nSaturday Daytime\nWe will be visiting the historical house of Wentworth Woodhouse for the day.  Once home to the Fitzwilliam family\, it is one of the great houses of England\, a mighty work of architecture\, a palace of beauty and art and for 300 years both a political powerhouse and the hub of social and economic life across a swathe of South Yorkshire.\nThe last Earl Fitzwilliam died in 1989 and since then the house has been greatly neglected.  It is now owned by the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust (WWPT) which was established in 2013. The overarching purpose of the Trust is to secure the future of Wentworth Woodhouse for the public benefit. In particular: 1. To preserve the House and grounds on a long-term sustainable basis with extensive public opening; 2. To find sustainable and sympathetic uses for those parts of the property not open to the public; 3. To raise funds both for acquisition and repairs and other essential works.\nWe will be enjoying a guided tour of the building where we will hear about the house’s rich history and about the current restoration works.  While here we will also enjoy a lunchtime buffet. There is also an opportunity to tour the gardens. \nSaturday Evening\nThe Drumming Out of Chairman Nick Hawley will take place at Tankersley Manor. Drinks Reception\, a fine 3 course meal followed by musical entertainment\, after welcoming in the new Chairman Graeme Greenfield. \nSunday Morning\nThe final event of the weekend is the Senate Breakfast\, when you hear about Graeme’s plans for 2025 before making your way home. \nWe really look forward to hosting you for this fabulous weekend and the culmination of Senate Chairman Nick Hawley’s year in office. \nPlease direct queries to DrummingOut2025@gmail.com or by calling Sarah Whittle\, DO2025 Director on +44 (0)7747-060748 or Nigel Wilkinson\, Co-Director DO2025 on +44(0)7831-544850 \nDrumming Out Promotional Video \nDrumming Out 2025 flyer
