Scottish Senate Lunch 1pm 18 October 2025
Everyone is Welcome
Members of the Scottish Senate look forward to providing a warm, and traditional, welcome to friends from the rest of the British Isles and elsewhere. We remain an innovative clan of hardy people, living in a different country, also willing to try new ways to attract people.
Over the years many members of the British Senate have joined us for our Annual Dinner, either in Perthshire or more recently Edinburgh, preceded by an increasingly short AGM.
While we are ageing Senators (who is not?) it is ‘Time for a Change! Hence this year we will be making two changes –a Lunch and in Scotland’s little known Fourth City – Dundee. Moreover to make this change easy for Travelling People, the Scottish Senate Committee has chosen ‘Malmaison Dundee’, opposite Dundee Station. A three course meal, preceded by a welcome drink at £45 for ‘canny’ travellers.
In addition to the obvious attraction of a Scottish Senate Lunch, there are many reasons for Senators and friends to travel to our event. Dundee was once known as the City of Three Js – Jam, Jute and Journalism. Dundee had many connections with the maritime industry with ‘Discovery’ which took Robert Falcon Scott to the Antarctic, built here in 1901, now moored in Victoria Dock, across the road from our lunch venue. During the last sixty years it has undergone a transformation with the development of cash machines and more recently video games.
Fully anchored, alongside the ‘Discovery’, is ‘V&A Dundee’ opened in 2018, the first V&A museum outside London, designed by the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. If that is not sufficient to attract the palettes of Southern Senators, we could also suggest time to spend exploring the displays at ‘The McManus’, Dundee’s renowned Art Gallery and Museum.
Over the years the British Senate has marked this event as a ‘Drumming Out’. We could term this the ‘Drumming Out’ of Pam Cradock, released following a two year sentence as Chairman. However the Scottish Senate does not now engage in Drumming Outs. We debated having a ‘Drumming In’ for the new person. Due to our democratic procedures, we are unable to share who that person might be until after our AGM at noon that day. Come and see who the person is!
Attractive weekend accommodation rates are available by contacting the Malmaison, while the city offers a wide range of accommodation options.
